Hook LDN went down to 229 The Venue on Great Portland Street to watch the latest new music talent hit the stage.
It's safe to say Time Out's 'Rising Stars' event did not disappoint. The freshest upcoming music stars from the UK hit the stage with confidence and presence, with voices that excited and inspired. Fitting six acts into one event might have been a squeeze, but the sets from each artist were polished and professional.
The night kicked off with Mark Sullivan who delivered a stunning but simple acoustic set to warm up the proceedings, followed by the eclectic Malory Torr, whose futuristic funk/pop sound reminded us of Marina and The Diamonds. With vocals and harmonies pitch perfect, her song 'Rapture' was a sure fire crowd-pleaser and deserves to be an absolute smash (watch out for this one).
Liverpool's own Joe Slater was up next and despite having a shorter 15-minute guest set, Joe completely energised the crowd with his wit and cheek. Having previously got through to bootcamp on ITV's 2014 X Factor series, and as a regular character on the BBC's Waterloo Road, it was clear Joe's confidence and sound was mature beyond his years, managing with ease to get everyone singing and clapping along to his tune of the night, 'Lonely'.
Nick Howe commanded the stage with 'It's Only Love' and 'The Struggle Is Real', with a likeness equally close to Arctic Monkeys, Jake Bugg and One Republic. After touring in over 15 countries already, Nick is sure to soon be riding the sound waves in a big way.
The end of the evening took a blues / rock turn, with Muddy Waters-inspired band Wang Dang Doodle performing 'Easy Strut' and hurling the audience into a land of country Americana rock 'n' roll, and Alternative rock band Stellify rounded up the event with a mellow and hazy mix of tunes.
