Hook LDN x Jones: TGE 17

19 May 2017

Where better than Brighton's The Great Escape festival to discover the freshest new musical talent? We headed down for day one of the now iconic seaside event with Liberty Music PR, our sunglasses and camera in tow. Liberty Music PR hosted the #GRLPWR segment at Hotel Pelirocco on the seafront, bringing female artists together to perform sets throughout the day and sit down for some interviews with us as well. Headlining the day was Jones.

Flawless; the word that springs to mind when talking about singer-songwriter Jones. She possesses a poised, elegant and calm demeanour, unfazed by the craziness around her. She walks lightly but with a noticeably profound confidence. Her melodic, dreamy house sound is formed of gentle layered harmonies, soft guitar plucks (reminiscent of London Grammar), transient drum beats and an artistic and subtle use of synths. With a voice like silk and the looks and style of a superstar to match, Jones is every inch the stand-out performer.

What do you do to prepare before a set performance?

I like to release any sort of nervous energy by stretching and moving around, jumping and doing crazy vocal warm ups.

When did you know you wanted to be a music artist?

Very young, probably from about the age of 5-6 I knew I wanted to sing. It was always my childhood dream. I used to sing along to the Spice Girls and 90's pop music and then my mum would play loads of classic, soul music so I would learn to sing from those sorts of artists, imitating people like Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston.

"Then at 15/16 I started to write my own music, taught myself how to play the keyboard and sort of started turning my diaries into songs."

I kept pushing myself and going to open mic nights and working with people I met there and just doing everything I could possibly do.

How would you describe your musical style and influences?

My music is classic soul pop. I love all the old greats like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye and I feel like my music has a feel of that era and those artists, but in a modern shape and body. In terms of my contemporaries, I love Nikki Lee, Little Dragon and Tame Impala.

If you could be any artist, dead or alive, for a day, who would you be and what would you do?

Who would I be? Oh god. I think it could be fun to be Sade. She's still going around doing her thing ... Yep, I'd love to be her for a day on tour.

Who would you love to hear cover your music?

That’s a tough question. Actually I’d love to hear Tame Impala cover my music, I think they would so something really cool with it.

Favourite moment as an artist so far?

The first thing that comes to mind as a stand out moment for me would be playing on Jools Holland. That’s been my most defining moment so far!

What have you got planned for the summer? Any new music we can look forward to?

Actually my main focus for this summer is writing. I’ll be writing for my second record. I’ve been travelling to Sweden back and forth, I've actually already been a few times already this year, and gearing up to put out my next single!

How would you describe your style in 3 words?

Definitely classic! Feminine and … minimal? Minimal or simple. I think my fashion influences come from Swedish fashion, I love the brand ACNE. Apart from that I just love vintage shopping and having a good old rummage in boutiques. I guess trends affect you to an extent because you see them everywhere but I tend to basically do my own thing.
