An Interview with Tequisha

15 June 2017

We go to a fair few gigs and festivals in the summer. But one of our favourite recent performances was that of young singer-songwriter, Tequisha. We watched her live set in Brighton and immediately fell in love with her sweet girl-next-door persona and enchanting vocals. Her music makes for a perfect star-gazing soundtrack and whether you listen to her acoustic versions or studio recordings, you can't help but feel slightly lighter and more at peace with the day than once you've heard her sing.

With her debut single out in just under two weeks time at the end of June, we thought now would be the perfect time to share with you a little bit more about the up-and-comer in our interview at The Great Escape Festival.

When did you know you wanted to be a music artist?

Oh it sounds so cliche doesn't it? But I have always loved music from a very young age and I was 11 I started messing around on the guitar and I was awful! My parents kept encouraging me to try new things so I kept at music and tried piano and other instruments. Then one day at school when I was 15, I picked up a guitar in the music block and I don't know what happened but something worked and I found notes and a style that I liked and I wrote a song then which I still perform now. So then it went on naturally from there.

How would you describe your musical style?

As an overall general style, I'd say probably 'ambient electronic acoustic'. It depends on the setlist and the venue itself as to what type of tracks I play or if I play acoustic or with a band, but yeah, generally speaking very chilled out.

 Who influences your music?

The band Daughter are a huge influence for me. Elena Tonra's lyrics are so poetic and I write quite poetically like her so I felt I could always relate to her storytelling. I just love their whole style, their instrumentation ... and then also, Coldplay. They are my favourite band in the entire world and I love their electronic direction.

If you could be any artist, dead or alive, for a day, who would you be and what would you do?

You know what, I think I'm going to say Rihanna. That sounds so mainstream, but I feel like she is just so free with herself and she is so expressive and does what she wants. I like to think I'm the same and she is just on another level and I'd love to be able to view the world that way.

What do you do to prepare before a set performance?

I will go over the set with my guitarist, drinking lots of water .. nervously eating a lot of bread!

What's been your favourite moment so far in your career?

Oh, my favourite moment would be playing at The Great Escape! It's such a good platform for new artists so it's lovely to feel like you're heading in the right direction as it's so reputable.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?

Hmmm .. casual, minimal and chilled. I don't go too extreme! I like to be comfortable and simple, I think I get that from my mum.

What have you got planned for the summer? Any new music we can look forward to?

I've recently dropped a single with The Last Port, who is based in France. I released a song with an artist in New York called Element The City on the 9th June and then on the 30th June I have my debut single coming out called Keep On Keeping On.
