Q&A with ARIA

16 October 2017

We made the most of the beautiful mid-October weather to chat with and photograph singer-songwriter ARIA.

With tastemakers such as The Line Of Best Fit, Spindle Magazine and Popjustice already supporting the London-based musician, we made sure to add our name to the fast-growing list of admirers.

ARIA’s adaptable and captivating vocals merge with a variation of styles from soul to electro-pop and RnB. With her lead single 'Hope' out now, we're sure you won't want to miss getting to know this talented upcoming artist for yourself.

When did you first realise you wanted to sing?

I started singing when I was about 4, and then when I moved to London at 18 I pursued it properly as a career. I've always sang and it's always been clear to me that it's what I'm meant to be doing.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Hmmm ... Loyal, impulsive and creative!

Who did you grow up listening to?

I grew up listening to a lot of the great Americana, almost blue-eyed soul singers like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks .. all those kinds of traditional songwriters who wrote such incredible melodies and sang with such rough and authentic voices. My contemporary favourite has to be BANKS. She is amazing. Lyrically, she is just so honest and raw. Her metaphors ... the way that she explains things through her music is incredible. She is fresh, unique and a true artist. In a day and age when so many people are making music, she is truly doing something different and I don't know how she isn't dominating the world.

If you could play any event in the world, what would it be?
I just REALLY want to play Jools Holland! I know it's not the Staples Centre or anything big like that, but I think it would be great. There's no other TV show like it, and it's a big deal for musicians - the show transcends all ages and genres, I think it's great!

Do you have any style icons?

This sounds really cheesy ... but my mum is. Back in the day when she was an art teacher, she always had such a cool sense of style and all her friends have told me the same thing. She is confident and unique and definitely stands out from the crowd, which I love and am inspired by - not to follow trends but to just dress as yourself and express it as creatively and originally as possible.

What's been the highlight of your 2017?

I really love this artist called Martin Craft and his album Blood Moon, and at the start of the year I got to go to Berlin and work with him. I asked my agent if it was possible for me to go and write some material with him and she managed to set it up and it was incredible. Unfortunately this EP was finished at the end of last year, but these new songs will definitely make it onto the next EP.

What have you got coming up for what remainder of this year?

We have a few acoustic sets coming up but I think the next few months will be focused on writing and finishing up the next EP, whilst this latest EP is in the process of being released! It's been a great year of progress, and hopefully next year will be a year of live shows and spreading my wings.
