Q&A with July Jones

30 August 2017

What do you get when you mix the total bad-assery of 70's music sensation Blondie, the striking looks and attitude of Scarlett Johansson and the mesmerising presence of Marilyn Monroe all together? You get July Jones

At 21 years old, July has the combined drive, ambition, charisma and talent of all of the aforementioned icons. Remarkably self-assured, artistic and already wise to the inner workings of music industry politics and practices, July is taking confident strides towards her goals.

How did you get your start in music?

When I was 6, I joined a classical music school where I learned how to play the piano. I was there for about 6 years before my mum encouraged me to get singing lessons. In my early teens I started posting videos on YouTube and one of them reached 500,000 views. A record label in Germany saw the video and signed me and all of a sudden I was travelling back and forth between Germany and Slovenia, mostly writing for commercials. By the age of 18 the contract ended and I moved here to London to work where I'm now developing my style. I want to take on the electronic-pop genre and so i'm taking the time to work on that. The dream is to write for other big name artists as well as myself!

Who would you say are your top 3 musical influences?

Number #1 would definitely be The Weeknd. I kind of want to do a female version of what he's doing, his sound is very similar to what I picture for myself and I love how a lot of his music is quite controversial. Secondly, I'd have to say Banks, and thirdly, Dua Lipa from more of a commercial / pop perspective. I'd say I'm somewhere between Banks and Dua Lipa.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Tomboy. Edgy. Girlboss.

What have your special highlights been this summer?

My favourite show this year was London Pride, it was my second year performing. It's always my favourite event, it's such an amazing community and obviously I'm a part of it and it just means a lot to me to perform for that community who believe in me and accepts me for who I am.

Any new music coming up?

We just finished my second single! We have like 30 songs finished so we've been selecting which one to put out. So I'm very excited, it's coming out at the end of October with a music video, but I can't tell you the title yet!

Do you have a dream venue to play one day?

Oh, definitely the Royal Albert Hall ... I believe I will be there one day! But for now, I think KOKO would be really nice, next year sometime. We're playing at Cargo in September so the next level up for me would be KOKO hopefully, so fingers crossed.

What's your favourite thing to do in London?

I LOVE going to parks and then just exploring weird quirky venues that London has to offer. I especially love Camden ... where we are right now. I just love the creative environment, the buildings and architecture ... the colours in London are beautiful. If there are bars or restaurants in cool settings like warehouses or old stations then I love discovering those.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given that you would pass on?

Well, I think the quote I live by is, "take your broken heart and turn it into art" - I just love that. In terms of actual advice, when I came out of the record label, loads of people wanted to tell me who I was and what I should be doing, but my mum told me just "be who you truly are" and you don't have to be a girly girl if you don't feel like that so just be who you are and follow your gut and go in that direction, even if others tell you not to.
